- Excellent location in South County Dublin
- Fabulously elegant castle bedrooms.
- Friendly service, great food and facilities.
When Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel opened its doors in the early 70’s it rapidly became the hotel of choice for those of us who grew up in the area. A handful of friend’s weddings, several family celebrations and many dinners, meetings and parties took place within those castle walls. Over the years the hotel has continued to grow in popularity with the local and wider community and has become one of Dublin’s favourite hotels.
We visited again recently and were delighted to see it buzzing with guests of all ages enjoying Sunday lunch, afternoon tea, and indeed family celebrations once again as a Christening party was taking place. While our expectations of the hospitality industry have grown substantially since the 70’s, Fitzpatrick Castle has continued to excel, and we had a really lovely stay there.
ACCOMMODATION AT FITZPATRICK CASTLE
We were really lucky to have some of the most unique rooms in the original castle building itself, and enjoyed luxuries such as four poster bed, claw foot bath, large separate lounge area, wonderful views and stylish and elegant furnishings. I felt like royalty in my suite which housed a secret passage way to the adjoining living area which could also be converted into extra sleeping area. A family of four could live happily here for a week! Deluxe extras included a tray across the bath that had rings for the champagne/wine glasses and a magnifying mirror should you want to work on your complexion while bathing! Not far away my companion had her own suite and with every conceivable extra already in place, we were wanting for nothing!DINING AT FITZPATRICK CASTLE
PJ’s restaurant offers award winning fine dining while The Dungeon Bar & Grill offers contemporary cooking which we found to be excellent value. Down to the dungeon we went for dinner, but indeed it was far from torture we found there! Starting with a cocktail from their extensive cocktail list we enjoyed a Dungeon Special – Peach Schnapps, Amaretto, Peach Puree and Orange Juice; and a perfect classic martini. The menu was well balanced with plenty of choice for all tastes. I opted for the special which was a fresh tuna steak cooked with olives and tomatoes, and our other main dish was a fillet steak with a Béarnaise sauce. Starters included a tempura of prawns and some tasty duck spring rolls with an oriental sauce. Desserts were pure indulgence with chocolate chip cookie and ice cream and a chocolate and orange torte. The wine list was extensive and while we pondered between choosing a Sauvignon Blanc from Chile or Chablis, our helpful waiter offered us a little taste of the Chilean wine as he had a bottle already open. A number of wines are available by the glass and a half-bottle list offers plenty of choice in both reds and whites.Service was attentive and friendly, and indeed it was throughout the whole stay, with nothing but pleasant and helpful staff from the Head Porter Peter to everybody we met.
Next visit we promised ourselves we would visit PJ’s Restaurant, as the menus sounded very tempting with dishes including Grilled Dover Sole on the Bone and Escalope of Veal. A lot of classic sounding dishes here that included local ingredient details. The set menu at €45 seemed exceptionally good value.
We enjoyed a brisk walk up Killiney Hill the afternoon we arrived which is just beside the hotel, and I went for a session in the Fitness Centre before breakfast the following morning. And while we lived like royalty during our lovely stay at Fitzpatrick’s Hotel, we did feel we made an effort to be a little healthy as well!
It really is a fabulous hotel, and we were delighted to be back in the area we grew up in once again. We certainly will not leave it so long before the next visit!
